    CASING

    Casing pipe is most often used in underground construction projects to encase or protect utility lines from being damaged.                                                  Once a well has been drilled, if it is to become a production well, the well must undergo completion. While drilling a well cuts through the rock formations and allows drilling engineers to reach the reservoir below, the raw sides of the well cannot support themselves.     TUBING

    Tubing is pipe used for the transportation of crude oil and natural gas from an oil or gas layer to the surface after drilling is complete. It is made to withstand the pressure generated from the extraction process.     PUP JOINT

    Pup joints and varying lengths of tubing and casing are used to adjust the production string length as close as possible to the desired value. Then the adjustable union or joint is installed, rotationally adjusted, and locked to the desired make up length. In dual completions, the tool can be used to adjust the length of the short string. The adjustable unions and joints facilitate tubing space out when completing a well. In most completions, the length of tubing available at surface is not enough for proper wellhead installation and operation.

    COUPLING

    A short length of pipe used to connect two joints of casing or tubing. A casing or tubing coupling has internal threads (female threadform) machined to match the external threads (male threadform) of the long joints of casing. The two joints of casing are threaded into opposite ends of the casing coupling.
